Our Heritage

Based in Sheffield the steel heartland of Great Britain, Macalloy’s roots can be traced back almost 100 years.

In December 1922 McCall and Company (Sheffield) Ltd was formed to supply cut and bent reinforcing steel to the domestic market.

Following WW II Donovan Lee and William McCall developed a chrome-alloy bar for use in post-tensioning concrete applications, registering the Macalloy name in 1948.

The company grew rapidly fuelled during this period by the post-war construction boom and McCalls as it began exporting products overseas as early as the 1960s.

In the 1980s, Sir Norman Foster was commissioned by the French car company Renault to design a high-tech building for their UK operations. The brief was to maximise the internal space by “hanging” the roof using external bracing.

The building, now a Grade II listed building went on to win numerous design awards and began a trend in wide span structural design using Macalloy Tension Structures range of products.

Many of the world’s leading architects adopted the design principals in their own innovative structures such as Chicago Arts Institute (Architect Renzo Piano), Louis Vuitton Foundation Paris (Architect Frank Gehry) and 88 Wood Street, London (Architect Richard Rodgers).

Modern Day

Today Macalloy is now privately owned and trading from its purpose-built facilities in Dinnington, Sheffield. This move enabled the company to increase capacity and continue to supply the highest quality products including:

  • Tension Structures
  • Facade Engineering
  • Post-Tensioning
  • Ground Engineering
  • Site Services – Equipment, Training and Hire

Over the years, Macalloy has developed strong business partnerships providing Consulting Engineers & Architects with a comprehensive choice of products and services.

Macalloy’s supply chain continues to expand via an international network of Macalloy agents and distributors, ensuring continued growth in the global market.

Macalloy is committed to buying ‘green steel’ in order to help our environment and reduce carbon emissions, our manufacturing process is based on recycled steel scrap and a Nordic fossil-free electricity mix. As a result, the carbon footprint of our steel bar is a full 80 percent lower than the global average.

Macalloy products are used throughout the construction industry and have been featured in many prestigious global products including four of the Russian World Cup Stadiums, 7 star Burj Al-Arab Hotel in Dubai, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore and Jubilee Bridge in London.
