Geneva Airport, Switzerland

The city of Geneva in Switzerland is famous for being home to the global headquarters of both the United Nations and the Red Cross. It is also a popular destination for tourists, with thousands flocking to the city as well as the spectacular Lake Geneva. Over 17 million passengers travel through Geneva airport every year with the numbers expected to increase to over 25 million by 2030.

The new East wing of Geneva airport opened to flights in the spring of 2021. It’s an impressive structure which has been designed to allow natural light to enter throughout the long, bright glass corridor.

Macalloy supplied 520 architectural bars and fittings in 75mm diameter. The project used just short of 100 tonnes of Macalloy products, which are visible throughout the 520m walkway and are a major feature, complementing the minimalistic architectural style of the building.

The building is highly energy-efficient and has been designed with a focus on sustainability. The triple-glazed corridor allows streams of natural light to permeate, whilst still providing thermal insulation. The solar panels on the roof, the heat pumps and LED lighting combine to create an ‘energy-positive’ building. The East Wing design was selected from the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) in 2010.

The winning design was based on:

  • The desire for a strong image
  • The quality of the passenger space with an emphasis on natural daylight
  • Maximum transparency
  • A model for lasting development
  • Evolutionary building with long-term adaptability
  • Flexibility in term of passenger flows
  • An airfield free of constraints
  • Unification of the landside and airfield campus
  • Modular construction
  • An efficient construction methodology based on prefabrication

The completion of the East wing is a major improvement for the airport, providing greater comfort and a beautiful space for passengers, supporting the airport’s sustainability goals and creating flexible, additional space to accommodate the increasing number of passengers.
