Panaji Town Bridge, Goa, India

Products in use : Macalloy 460 stainless steel M48/ M64 bars

Panaji town is the capital of the Indian state of Goa and the headquarters of the North Goa district. Previously, it was the capital of former Portuguese India which dominated Goa’s history for over four hundred years. The climate in Panaji is hot in summer and equable in winter with temperatures reaching as high as 32 degrees Celsius.

Major landmarks styled in traditional Portuguese baroque architecture intertwined in the terraced hills, adorning the balconies and red tiled roofs, make this city a beautiful tourist attraction. Panaji has been selected as one of the hundred Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under the Smart City Mission which means it is an urban renewal mission of the Indian government.

In September 2022, the Gyan Setu pedestrian bridge linking Mala to the Central Library was completed and inaugurated by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).

Reducing motorisation in the state has been a major aim of the GSIDC and this iconic bridge contributes to achieving this. Promoting a sustainable environment and its structural beauty are considered major benefits to the town. The pillar in the centre is decorated at the top in the colours of the Indian flag, red, white, and green which is in keeping with the ongoing “Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav” celebrations which commenced in March 2021. This important date initiated a 75-week countdown to celebrate the 75th anniversary of India’s independence on 15th August 2023. This festivity created by the Government is to celebrate India’s glorious history of its people, culture, and achievements.

The bridge is ninety-nine meters in length, and three meters wide, with a span of fifty meters over the river Rua de Ourem creek.

One of the reasons, why this bridge is so unique, is that the cable-stayed bridge is constructed on a single
pylon. Macalloy supplied 460 stainless steel bars in M48 and M64 which are seen clearly as a major architectural feature of the bridge reaching the main pylon.
