The German Gymnasium, London

Products used : Stainless Steel Architectural bars

Background:

The German Gymnasium near St Pancras in London was originally built in 1864–65 as the first purpose-built gymnasium in England. It was constructed for the German Gymnastics Society, founded in 1861 by Ernst Ravenstein, and served as a venue for indoor sports such as fencing, weightlifting, and boxing.

Notably, it hosted events for the first National Olympian Games in 1866, it was the birthplace of a movement that would inspire the modern Olympic Games.

The National Olympic Games in 1866 were held across multiple venues in London. Indoor events such as fencing, rope climbing, and gymnastics took place inside the German Gymnasium, while outdoor events were staged at Crystal Palace and on the River Thames.

Original features like laminated timber roof trusses and hooks for climbing ropes remain visible today, preserving its sporting heritage.

After decades of varied use (including offices and storage), the building was transformed into a restaurant by D&D London and officially opened as a dining venue in November 2015. Today, it operates as a Grand Café, restaurant, and bar, blending its Victorian heritage with modern German-inspired cuisine.

Macalloy Involement : Provided stainless steel architectural bars to support aspects of the roof structure.
