Background:
Culture, art, and beauty all come together in the city of Barcelona.
Once a bullring, the Las Arenas de Barcelona building has seen much change since its 1900 construction and is today a bustling shopping centre. After the last bullfight in 1977, the arena remained empty until it was repurposed for commercial use and reopened as a retail complex in 2011, reflecting the gradual declining interest in bullfighting in Spain.
With the collaboration of Alonso Balaguer-Arquitectos Asociados and British architect Richard Rodgers,http://rshp.com the ancient bullring’s original façade was restored, allowing it to retain its one-of-a-kind heritage.
Its six-story design and prime location near the Plaza de Espana attracts a large number of shoppers who can peruse more than a hundred stores . The area is home to a multitude of dining options and entertainment venues, as well as a rooftop terrace that offers an unforgettable view of the city and its renowned buildings, such the majestic Sagrada Família, designed by Gaudi.
Ample windows let in natural light, and the design incorporates materials like steel, wood, and stone both inside and out.
Macalloy Involvement:
For the purpose of post tensioning the building’s façade, Macalloy supplied 1030 bars. Much of the renovation made use of Macalloy tie rods in a variety of contexts, such as outside lift towers and walkways.
